Longing for the day Black History Month will be no more

On the last day of Black History Month I think it is appropriate to reflect on recent past events featuring black struggles in the world, particularly in North-America. It is also the right time to bring forward diversity and inclusiveness.

Looking at everything that has recently happened I only have one thing to say. I am longing for the moment we won’t need a Black History Month anymore.

I am yearning for the day slavery and segregation won’t be a vivid and painful reminder of the past because their trails no longer undermine the present.

I am dreaming of the time when there will be no need for super women like Mary Ann Shadd Cary or Margaret Crittenden Douglass to remind us to put aside our differences and look forward to a better, more inclusive and more human future for kids of all races.

I am pining for the glorious advent of the moment where people of different colours can be seen together in public without raising suspicions or generating 911 calls.

I am also dying to witness the moment when interracial marriage will stop engendering polemics and serve as matters of division instead of unifying people as marriage is supposed to do.

I am wondering when the day will come to no longer recurring to an #OscarSoWhite controversy to shed light on the work of people of colour or #OscarSoWhite asian to bring diversity to the table.

I am looking forward to the day failed jokes about Asian kids will no longer be introduced to truly reflect on the lack of diversity in our society and  compel all communities (Aboriginal, Asian, Black , Latino, and White) to finally come together to discuss of the importance of respect, acknowledgement, and equality to everyone. (Shout out to #ChrisRock for bringing that up! Thanks for taking one for the team bro. You’ll do better next time.)

This is my hope for the future. That’s why I am yearning for the day Black History Month or any racial, equality, fairness measures, celebration, and movements will be no more. Because they will no longer be needed.
