1 – What does ‘being a mom’ mean to you? – ¿Qué significa ser madre “para usted?

Para mí, ser madre es ser una diosa, una diosa que da a luz, que con amor y dolor trae una criatura al mundo para continuar el curso de las generaciones. Es ese ser que siempre está presente y pendiente en la vida de un hijo: en sus enseñanzas, en su cuidado, en su afectividad, en su educación.

For me, being a mother is like being a goddess, a goddess who gives birth, whom with love and pain brings a creature to the world to continue the course of generations. It is that being who is always alert and present in their children’s life, teaching, taking care, giving them affection and education.

3 – Does your mom inspire you to have a family of your own some day? – ¿Su madre le inspiró para tener sus propios hijos algún día?

No soy madre todavía, pero el amor de mi madre me ha inspirado para tener mis propios hijos que espero lleguen pronto.

I am not a mother yet, but my mother’s love has inspired me to have my own children which I hope will happen in a close future.

4 – As a parent, what would you change from the way your mom is dealing/ has dealt with motherhood? – Si un día usted se convirtió en uno de los padres, lo que haría de manera diferente de tu madre?

Sí un día llego a ser madre, enseñaría a mis hijos a amar y valorar los orígenes de su cultura. Mi madre por cuestiones personales y de protección no nos enseño su cultura, su lengua ni su historia. Soy de madre haitiana y padre dominicano, sin embargo no tengo la cultura materna porque a mis hermanos y a mí, se nos negó. Por tal motivo, cuando tengan mis hijos, tienen que conocer la historia de sus padres y de sus ancestros.

If one day I become a mother, I will teach my children to love and appreciate their origins and their culture. My mother for personal reasons and protection didn’t teach me about her culture, her language or her history. I have a Haitian mother and a Dominican father; however, I don’t know about my maternal culture because my brothers and I, we were denied access to such knowledge. For this reason, when I have my children, they will have to know the history of their parents and ancestors.

5 – What price would you put on your mom’s love? – ¿Qué precio lo atribuye al amor de tu madre?

Ser madre no tiene precio. No existe oro, ni diamantes que puedan poner precio al amor de una madre.

Being a mother is priceless. There is no gold or diamonds that can be compared to a mother’s love.
